Colonel OTANI Yasuo is the director-general, science and technology at Air Staff Office (ASO), Japan Ministry of Defense (JMoD), responsible for innovation in multi-domain operations.
Graduated from National Defense Academy in 1989, and also graduated from National Defense Academy Graduate School in aerospace engineering in 1994. After that, got a Ph.D. in systems engineering from KEIO University Graduate School of System Design and Management. The research theme is the Dual-Use applicability for space operations especially Space Situational Awareness.
Served in a lot of R&D assignments for the fighter aircraft and missile development project, and the staff assignments include the Cabinet Secretariat for space policy and the Air Staff for R&D, HR, General Affairs. Commanded the Air Base Group of 3rd Air Wing in MISAWA Air Base in 2016 which comprises more than 500 professional airmen.
Experienced military aerospace engineering fields with over 20 years of project management carrier in Japan Ministry of Defense. Excellent reputation for resolving complicated problems and improving mission achievement using Systems Engineering approach.
