Summary

A Water and Environmental engineer with expertise in hydrological modeling, water quality and watershed risk analysis. Interested in eco-hydrological modeling to understand various watershed hydro-geomorphological functions, the influence of human and natural disturbances, and the risk identification for sustainable water resource management at the micro, meso, and macro scales. Avid user of Python and R for data management, data processing, visualization, communication, reports/dashboards, and shiny web applications. Passionate about open science and the use of digital tools for research.

I am a Kenyan, fluent in English and Swahili (beginner Japanese and French). worked in Kenya and Liberia (Africa) and started research career overseas in Japan. Apart from my research, I am committed to helping needy students in my community as well as improving our environment. I initiated sponsorship of few students through their studies since 2010 and planting of 1000 trees annually in my hometown in Kenya since this year April (target was my neighbors, but next year’s target is my former elementary school students).

Work History

Postgraduate Researcher

Nagasaki University
  • My PhD work involved developing an alternative method for estimating river discharge and rapidly undertaking environmental impact assessment of a watershed with limited historical data
  • I undertook collection of intermitted discharge and water quality data, proximal river gauge data, used of satellite to determine changes in land coverage, in-situ soil profiles government maps, and weather conditions, for hydrological modeling to assess the ungauged basins of the watershed
  • I was directly involved in the field data collection, sampling and laboratory water quality analysis for Isahaya Dam watershed (Japan) and Nyanza Gulf (Kenya)
  • Outputs: PhD: First‑author publications (2) and Master: First-author publication (1)
  • Supervision: Master’s thesis (3) and undergraduate thesis (6).

Aspen Medical/USAID
  • Coordinated quality control processes for water supply, sanitation, and hygiene ensuring synergy between the medical team and the hygienist in handling Ebola patients and preventing infection
  • Trained the local communities and students on importance of clean water, proper sanitation and hygiene during workshops.

Project Technical Officer

Health, and Water Foundation
  • Conducted a needs assessment of public institution sanitary infrastructure that required rehabilitation or where fresh development was essential
  • Initiated and formulated proposals that resulted in funding of various water, sanitation, and hygiene projects
  • Designed water supply and sanitary facilities, participated in the procurement process, and monitored the execution of the projects
  • Designed and facilitated various rapid community-led hygiene promotions.

Volunteer - Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Engineer
